How to answer add/delete/revise questions on the SAT and ACT

The ACT English section tests both reading and writing skills simultaneously, and it is necessary to change your approach based on the type of question you are being asked. While grammar questions require you to recall specific rules, rhetoric questions require you to apply specific concepts about how paragraphs and essays work: what makes an effective transition (what is the logical relationship between two ideas?); how a paragraph is most logically developed; and what constitutes relevant vs. irrelevant information. Unlike grammar questions, rhetoric questions can be absolutely, perfectly grammatically correct yet still be wrong. You cant be fooled by how they sound you actually have to think (yes, think!) about whether they go along with the main idea of the passage or paragraph in question. In short, theyre reading questions, not writing questions. And because this is the case, you have to treat them like reading questions. That means going back to the passage, figuring out the  gist  of the section youre being asked to deal with, and figuring out what sort of information would be relevant. One of the biggest mistakes I consistently see people make on rhetoric questions is to start by looking at the answers and assuming theyll remember the content well enough to sort everything out rather than going back to the passage and working out the answer for themselves beforehand. When most people read the passages as theyre working through the questions, though, theyre usually only really paying attention to grammar rather than content. Theyre not thinking about main ideas and supporting information but rather about whether that comma in #27 was really supposed to be there. So when theyre asked to insert/delete information, they dont really have the full context for it. Remember: the readings on the English section are pretty simple. Its usually not too hard to figure out their main idea and thus whether a particular sentence or part of a sentence should be used to support it. Yes, it may take a whole 30 seconds, but thats time better spent actually figuring out the answer than staring at two options and trying to decide between them. So to sum up: 1) Read the question and identify exactly what youre being asked to insert or delete. 2) Go back to the passage and read as much as you need to figure out the main idea of the passage or paragraph. For questions that ask about the passage as a whole,  check the title: its  there to tell you what the passage is about. For questions that ask you about the middle of a paragraph, read the topic sentence. Conversely, if youre asked to insert the first sentence of a paragraph, jump ahead and read the middle of the paragraph. 3) Ask yourself whether the information in question is relevant to that topic and why/why not. 4) Look at the answers. The right one should pretty much pop out at you.

The documentary â€Å"The Lottery† tells a story about young children trying to get into a charter school for a better education and better teaching styles. Not to mention if certain kids don’t get in, they could always try again later. Many politicians do not like Clintons plan because they feel that itis too hard on small businesses, forcing them to pay 80% of theiremployees insurance, and because the Clinton plan does not limit pain andsuffering damages for malpractice suits.All the insurance companies areobviously against Clintons plan, because it will put restrictions on thepremiums, and he will force the insurance companies to accept high-riskpatients. Many of the large companies support Clintons plan because theyalready pay the insurance for most of their employees, and all Clintonplan will do is lower their premiums. But, many small businesses areagainst the plan because they do not currently pay any amount of theiremployees premiums, and they feel that the plan will take a large chunkout of their profits and they will be forced to lower wages. The AMA (American Medical Association) is against many things inClintons plan, most importantly the imposition of cost controls and thefailure to put financial limits on malpractice suits(In fact 600 doctorsmarched up the steps of Capital Hill to defend their right to earn sixtimes as much as the average American family, and still play golf onWednesdays). In general, no one is happy at the way the health care situation isbeing handled now, but even though everyone accepts the fact that a changeis needed, many people are skeptical about Clintons health care plan. Yes,his plan sounds good on paper, but will it work? is what many people arewondering. Overall Clintons plan is generally good. If it works it will provideuniversal coverage with controlled costs. If it works. The problem withClintons plan, and in fact any other plan is that it has to put limits onoperations, research, and tests. Who is to set these limits that mightdecide whether a person might live or die? Clintons plan also does not allow much for freedom of choice ofdoctors. Clinton is pushing the HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) partof his plan, and if one wants to choose his own doctor, he must pay adeductible and 20% of the costs of the visit. Americans, in general, do not want an HMO type system rather they wantto be able to go to the doctor they choose. American people prefer atrusting doctor-patient relationship, if they know their doctor it makeslife much easier. Clintons plan also has a problem in that it does not limit the amountof money that can be sued for for pain and damages in a malpractice suit. If Clinton were to add a clause about limiting the sum of money that couldbe collected for malpractice suits, he would get a great deal more supportfrom the AMA, and from doctors in general. Right now the health situation is America is very grave, and right nowPresident Clinton has a possible solution. His plan does not make everyonehappy, and it will not solve all our health problems no matter howsuccessful it is, but then again no possible plan will resolve all ourhealth care problems. Rock Genres In the 90's essays Rock music was decaying in the late 80s. The rock scene was suffering from a repetetive pattern of big hair, flashy clothes, long guitar solos, and lyrics that werent relating to the listeners. The music industry was begging for something new. This is the beat up state that rock was left in during the early nineties. But little did anyone know what was in store for rock in the 90s. What was about to come would redefine the meaning of rock forever. In the early 90s a band called Nirvana had made its debut into the mainstream. This band had bred the first genre of the 90s, Grunge. After the fall of Grunge a new genre had to take place. So once again the music industry was in need of something new. And so dawned the era of Alternative Punk, the second genre. Leading the scene were Green Day and Offspring. The punk scene brought on a whole new vibe of raw energy and anarchy. When the punk scene started to die down, a new breed of rock was surfacing to the mainstream. The Metal/Hardcore was the final genre of rock in the 90s. It consisted of bands such as KoRn, Limp Bizkit, and Rob Zombie. This genre was the hardest of the genres and could definantly cause the hugest mosh pit. The first genre of rock was called Grunge. It was named this simpley because of its lack of interest in fashion and the growling barked out vocals. It couldnt have came at a better time then it did. The later 80s were emerging and there was no sign of something new.
